Leadership Dispatch

Build a culture

Act in ways you want to be emulated.

A subtle, but extremely important aspect of leadership is culture building. This will happen implicitly on its own as the organization will tend to reflect the characteristics of its leadership.

But you should also think carefully about intentionally building culture in your organization.

Do you want a team whose response to a problem is to jump in and find a solution? Then be that person. If you see a problem that needs solving, get in there, find a solution, and fix the problem. Show your team that that is how issues are addressed and the team will eventually learn that this is a culture of problem solvers.

Encourage other people to do the same by publicly acknowledging their wins so you reinforce productive behavior.

Act in ways you want to be emulated. Discourage ways of acting that you do not wish to be reflected in your organization’s culture.
